Panther Service Day is going national!

ladderSince 2003, members of the university and Charleston communities have collaborated for the annual Panther Service Day, during which volunteers work on various projects to improve the city. The project has been a huge success and even earned statewide recognition as a recipient of the 2004 Governor's Hometown Service Award.

This year, the university is looking to expand this effort from coast to coast. In an effort to better connect our alumni and give back to our communities, we are looking for volunteers to help host a series of community-service projects throughout the United States on Saturday, April 19. As the project host, you will work directly with the EIU Alumni Services office and other fellow alumni to complete at least two hours of community service in your local area.

Student, instructor team up to create documentaries

nature's realm Student Kevin H. Jeanes and geology/geography instructor/climatologist Cameron Douglas Craig have taken their work out of the classroom and into the world, teaming up to produce three weather-related documentaries. The two, operating as Tempestas et Caelum Productions, have produced “An Illinois Winter,” about the harsh winter of 1830-31; “Expedition Nature’s Realm,” a nine-part series about the coexistence of humanity and nature on Earth; and “Stinging Dust & Forgotten Lives,” about the Dust Bowl. All-Greek Alumni Reunion set during Greek Week 2008

All of the old favorites, from Airband to Tugs, will highlight this year's Greek Week (April 5-12), but did you know there's also an All-Greek Alumni Reunion planned? Mark your calendar for Friday, April 11, and join your college friends at the Panther Paw (formerly Stix). Additional information will be available soon here.

Alumna to speak as part of African-American Heritage Month events

Many events are being held at EIU to celebrate African-American Heritage Month, including a Feb. 21 visit by Velisse Ammons Williams '88 . Williams will conduct a book reading and signing of her 2007 book, "Candy-Colored Friends," which educates children about inclusion and diversity. Did you know Eastern had a world-record-holding joggler in its midst in the early '90s? We caught up with Kathy (Glynn) Schaeffer '92 -- still the fastest woman to ever jog a mile while juggling, with a time of 6 minutes, 17 seconds -- for the "Where Are They Now?" feature in this spring's issue of Old Main Line, a magazine published exclusively for Alumni Association members. Alumni spotlight

Bob Carlock Bob Carlock '69, '70 retired Jan. 31 from his post as vice president of finance and administration at Rend Lake College, where he was lauded for "outside the box" management skills that contributed to the institution's growth and success. His initiatives included establishing RLC's textbook rental program, as well as spearheading the purchase and operation of an outlet mall that will add hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue to the college.
